For more information on Atelier Kempe Thill please visit: www.atelierkempethill.com Exhibition Atelier Kempe Thill - Specific Neutrality: October 21st 2005 - December 23th 2005, Goethe-Institut, Westersingel 9, Rotterdam. At the heart of this publication is Atelier Kempe Thill's quest to find prototypes for a global society. How can buildings be made neutral and flexible as well as specific? It features realized work such as the Light Building (a travelling museum pavilion) and row houses in Roosendaal (NL) alongside recent plans including those for a youth hostel in the former Nazi resort at Prora in Germany, and the Franz Liszt Concert Hall in Raiding, Austria. It further includes a number of fascinating but unrealized schemes amongst which the winning design 'Living Inbetween' for Europan 5 Rotterdam and the competition entry for the Nam June Paik Museum in Korea. This book is published in conjunction with the award of the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for Young Architects 2005 to Oliver Thill.

Abstract

**Environmental Microbiology: A Laboratory Manual** is designed to meet the diverse requirements of upper division and graduate-level laboratory sessions in environmental microbiology. The experiments introduce students to the activities of various organisms and the analyses used to study them. The book is organized into three thematic sections: Soil Microbiology, Water Microbiology, and Environmental Biotechnology. The first section includes experiments on the soil as a habitat for microorganisms, and introduces the main types of soil microorganisms, how they interact with the soil, and the techniques used in their analysis. Experiments in the second section cover assays of microbial pathogens--bacteria, viruses, and protozoan parasites--used in food and water quality control as well as an exercise in applied bioremediation of contaminants in water. The final section on biotechnology includes applications of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of bacteria and the use of enrichment cultures and a computer-based, physiological test bank to isolate and identify a bacterium useful in bioremediation. Designed for maximum versatility and ease of use for both the student and instructor, each experiment is self-contained and includes theoretical, practical, and pedagogical material.

Abstract

What does it actually look like in the offices of people who think on a day-to-day basis about good architecture? Where do the ideas and designs of contemporary architecture originate?Seventy-six architectural firms, in German-speaking countries and internationally, open their doors and show us the spaces in which they work. There is a view of the outside of each architectural firm, one of the interior, and a floor plan, where the work places of the owners are highlighted. This not only exemplifies the similarities and differences between the architects, but also the internal organization of the offices as well as the attitude expressed by each respective building. The rooms in which architects work and receive visitors today tell of a profession that is itself a polyglot, down to earth, makeshift, honest, ironic, serious, or playful. Employees work in skyscrapers and barns, in townhouses and storage buildings, on the water and in the woods. The exemplary views of the seventy-six architectural firms are accompanied by a fundamental observation of continuities and discontinuities of the "atelier/studio."
